FIRES.
[Per Press Association. | WANGANUI, Oct. 9. At midday yesterday a house owned b} r Dr Grace on his property three miles from town, and occupied by his manager, was burned down. The fire started in the kitchen through a faulty chimney. Part of the furniture waaTsaved^but the House was burned to the ground. .'The house was insured for .£4OO and the contents for .£SO in the National Office. DUNEDIN, Oct. 9. A fire broke out at five o'clock this morning in the Eureka Restaurant. The proprietor, who was sleeping alone on the premises, discovered the fire. The premises were gutted. Cooke and Matthews's printers' stock and machinery, on the same floor, was destroyed. On the second floor, Statham's office was badly damaged, and Bamfield's office Slightly. Insurances — On the building (owned" by Kempthorne, Prosser and Co.), .£2OOO in "the Standard, reinsured in the National, and London and Liverpool and Globe ; furniture and fixtures of the restaurant, J2IOO in the South British, the policy having only been taken out the day before yesterday; Cooke and Matthews, J2750 in the Standard, estimated loss £4W above the insurance ; Statham, .£3O in the New Zealand Office. Bamfield was uninsured.
