[Per Press Association. GISBORNE, Oct. 9. A meeting of burgesses to consider the proposed loan of .£18,500 for waterworks, passed a resolution that the scheme brought forward by the Borough Council was not acceptable to the ratepayers. NEW PLYMOUTH, Oct. 9. The premises of a dressmaker, . Miss Whitaker, were broken into last night, by men who attempted to assault Miss Whitaker, who is a middle-aged woman. A long struggle ensued until neighbours were aroused, and on their arrival the men decamped. This morning Osborne Wall, an umbrella mender, was arrested on suspicion, and remanded till Friday next. Considerable sensation has been caused by the occurrence. WELLINGTON, Oct. 9. A young man named Saul Solomons, a lias Samuels, alias Harrison, was arrested on the charge of obtaining .£46 by false pretences. He came from Auckland, and was on his way to Sydney. He is accused of selling shares twice over, and there are a number of other charges pending. Two hundred and forty sovereigns were found concealed in a pair of boots among his luggage. .'-'.;
