H.M.S. LIZARD.

HEAVY GALES MET WITH. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Oct. 3. The day after leaving Sydney the Lizard met 'with heavily southerly gales. Seas swept over her, and burst in the engineroom skylights, and the stokers were kneedeep in water. The cabins were flooded, and large bodies of water found a way to the f orehold, where a great quantity of stores was destroyed. One of the boats was washed away and lost. The gale lasted till noon next day. and so serious was the vessel's experience that those on board believe she had a narrow escape from foundering. On the 29th another heavy gale was met, which lasted till arrival. The ship only arrived to-day, the Wallaroo, which came in last night, having, by mistake, been signalled for the Lizard. The former also encountered the same weather, but came off with only trifling damage.
