A EEMA.RKABLE CONFESSION.
The Melbourne papers report the arrest and confession of .a woman named Emma Blurton, on charges of stealing, no fewer than sixteen different cases of larceny being traced to her. In her home was found a great quantity of stolen articles, and she then confessed her guilt, but added: "At the same time, I am not a thief, as you put it. I stole because I could not help myself. I stole because I was hypnotised by a woman, and had to do just exactly what that woman waaited. I will tell you her name, and you will find what I tell you to be true. You will find stolen property at her house. Why should I save her when she has brought me to this ? She started me thieving for her daughter. The girl fell in love with a young man who was not much struck with her. She wanted to attract his attention, and she set her heart on a new jacket— a smart neAv jacket. She could not afford to buy it, neither could her mother. So they hypnotised me, and told me to steal it. I could not help myself. I stole it, and the girl wore it. I don't know whether she caught her boy. They have kept me hypnotised almost ever since. There you are. That's all I know. Do what you like." The house indicted in the statement of the woman was subsequently searched, and some stolen articles were found in it. The woman who resides there, and who is implicated in the remarkable declaration of Blurton, will therefore be called upon fov an explanation.
