■■ Tuesday, Sept. 8. (Before Mr H. "WV. Bishop S.M., Mr A. Todd, J.P., and Mr E. R. Good, J.P.) Maintenance.— Charles Kennedy, for neglecting to obey an. order of the Court to pay 2s 6d per week towards the support of his father, John Kennedy, was sentenced to one month's imprisonment in default of payment of £2 5s arrears. . ' . Cruelty to Animal^.— D. Graham was charged with permitting four head of cattle to remain in the Eangiora S&leyards from about ten o'clock on Tuesday, August 25, to between three and four o'clock the following day without being provided with food or' water. Defendant admitted the charge, but explained that he was afraid one of the animals would give trouble in removal, and having to go to Christchurch on the Wednesday morning he could not entrust the : driving of the cattle to his employe. He believed the animals to have been well fed up to the timß they were put into the yards,. and had no intention to act with cruelty. The Stipendiary Magistrate said in his opinion it was gross cruelty to leave the animals as alleged, especially as it was cold, wet weather. Probably defendant had acted thoughtlessly. He would be fined £1, and costs 235. '■ Civil Cases.— Miles and Co. (Mr Cowlishaw) v. W. F. Joynt, claim £6 3s 2d. Judgment for plaintiff, by default, for amount and 23s 6d costs.— Stephens Bros. (Mr Helmore) v. Flutey, claim £2 15s 3d. Judgment for amount, and costs 14s.
