CANTERBURY WOMEN'S INSTITUTE.
A committee meeting of the Canterbury Women's Institute was held on Saturday evening, Mrs Blake, vice-president, in the chair. Correspondence was received and dealt with. It was resolved that a notice of motion to the effect that the Institute endeavour to obtain the co-operation of all societies of women throughout Australasia to work for international arbitration and general disarmament, should be considered after the general elections had taken, place. Extracts from the speeches of the Honsftigg, Peacock and Sir G-. Whitmore, on the repeal of the CD. Act Bill, were read, and the following resolution was unanimously passed:— "The committee of the Canterbury Women's Institute cordially thanks tho Hon G. Jones for his admirable address on the CD. Bill, and reprobates certain remarks uttered by the Hons Sir G. S. Whitmore, Peacock and Rigg as a disgrace to the Legislative Council. A subcommittee of three was appointed to drawiip " some reasons why married women should be economically independent," to be discussed at the next general meeting. Three ladies were deputed to wait on the Mayor in the matter of Mrs Blake s candidature for a seat on the Charitable Aid Board. . At the general meeting which followed, the subject of co-operative homes was deal with. Miss Shirreff Bain presided. Able and interesting papers and addresses in favour of the extension of co-opera-tion in housekeeping were given by Misses Cabot, A. E. Hookham, Shirreff-Bain and Atkinson, Mesdames Blake, Hayes, Black and Wells. It was announced that a public meeting would be held on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when gentlemen and ladies who intend to make trial of co-operative homes would speak on the subject. A resolution, to the effect that the next general meeting be open to the public, was passed. The subject for discussion will be, "Economic Independence of Married Women." Four new members were elected. - ' c
