LICENSING COMMITTEE.

CHRISTCHURCH. The qitarterly meeting of the Christchurch Licensing Committee was held at noon to-day, at the Magistrate's Court; present— Mr E. Beetham, S.M. (chairman), Messrs W. Langdown, F. Trent, D. M'Lennan, J. C Maddison, E. Smith, T. M'Clatchie and T. Gapes. Inspector Broham said the police report was satisfactory. Mr E. Hiorns, licensee of the Central Hotel, wrote applying for a cancellation of the endorsements of the license., which had been brdught about by tho conviction of the former licensee, Ingle. He said that these endorsements had a damaging effect on the business, while he himself was very particular in observing tho law as to trading on Sundays and after hours. Mr Beetham asked Mr, Hiorns, who attended personally, whether ne made this application'under legal advice. • *• Mr Hiorns said he did not, but he learned that at Kaiapoi a publican, whose license had been endorsed; had afterwards been granted a clean license. Mr Beetham said it would be his duty to advise the Licensing Bench that they had no power to grant the application. The committee gave its decision to that effect. This concluded tho business.
