In connection with this subject, the expressed idea of the chairman of the Wellington Education Board is worth thinking about. Fire. — A fire occurred at a quarter to twelve o'clock last night, when an unoccupied house at the corner of the Ferry Eoad and Matheson's Eoad, Phillipstown, was burned down. An alarm was given by the siren at the Eailway Station, and the chemical engine from Lichfield Street station went out.

Automatic Stoker and Smoke-Con-sumer. — A visit of inspection to Messrs Wood Bros.' mills at Addington was made by the members of the Christchnrch Drainage Board yesterday. The party included Mr John Deans (Chairman), the . members and the Board's Engineers. The object of the visit was to inspect the working of the Wood and Claydbn automatic stoker and smoke-con-sumer, with a view to its adoption on the boilers at the pumping station. Tho members expressed themselves greatly pleased with the apparatus, and instructed their Engineer to give a full and detailed report.
