MUTUAL IMPROVEMENT.

♦ . A meeting of the Young Men's Christian Association Literary Society was held on Monday evening. Mr H. Purdie occupied the chair. The subject for the evening was " Secretary's Box," and the questions discussed were " Gambling," " Should Women have a Seat in Parliament ? " " Dancing," and " Is Marriage a Failure ?" — The Springfield Mtitual Improvement Society met on Saturday evening, when there was a large attendance. Mr D. Naismith occupied the chair, and Mr Lyon gave an address on the "History of the Maoris," which was well received. — The newly-organised Sydenhani Literary Society held its first regular meeting in St Saviour's schoolroom on Monday evening. Mr Booth, the president, occupied the chair, and there was a fairly numerous attendance. Several nominations for membership were made. Anonymous contributions were the order of the evening. The Burnham Industrial School came in for some severe criticism at the hands of a lady visitor, whose description of what she saw was a revelation to most, present, and calculated to inspire at least considerable distrust as to the organisation and management of the institution. . "The New Woman," " The Lost Art of Conversation " and other subjects ■ were discussed with a good deal of interest and freedom. The society intends holding weekly meetings throughout the winter. A syllabus is being arranged which will provide plenty of matter .for the consideration 6f members, and a highly successful season is anticipated.
