Mr Fred Sutton, J.P., to-day sued Mr Grindell, a Native interpreter, foi .£3 3s for attesting the signatures of Natives to deeds and the use of his time and office. He mentioned a number of names of lawyers as charging cash fees, contending that he was equally entitled. Mr Cornford, for the defence, quoted Johnstone's oath for Justices, under which they are bound to accept no payment for services as Justices. Mr Sutton denied that he had ever taken, any such oath. The Magistrate, after hearing argument, nonsuited him. Alexander Bedingfield, who was charged with sending a threatening letter to a girl at Ormoudville, was acquitted, the evidence of identification being insufficient. MAETON, May 20. At a meeting of the Eangitikei Political Association held here this afternoon, Mr E. C. Bruce was selected to contest the Eangitikei seat at the next election. NELSON, May 20. George Eenal Gordon, a lad, has been sentenced to three months' imprisonment for stealing wearing apparel from his employers. The Probation Officer's report was unfavourable. DTJNEDIN, May 19. A Chinaman named Ah Hoy was committed for trial to-day for an attempted criminal assaiilt on a girl fourteen years of age. The evidence disclosed a shocking state of immorality. The complainant stated that . she went to accused's house with a girl eleven years old on the date the offence was alleged to have been committed, and admitted that she and two other girls went to another Chinaman's honse five weeks previously. A witness, eleven years of age, admitted that she and other girls had visited five different houses occupied by Chinese. ,
