CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, Mat 18. (Before Mr H. J. Hall, J.P., and Mr E. Green, J.P.) Drunkenness. — Three first offenders, all men, and John Williams, were each fined 5s with costs, in default twenty-four hours' imprisonment. Vagrancy. — Neils Ludwig,aKas Luderig, was charged with having insufficient lawful means of support. Accused pleaded guilty and was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. Obscene Language. — Samuel Sandford was charged with having used obscene language in Harper Street, Sydenham, on April 13. Mr Donnelly appeared for accused, who pleaded not guilty. After some evidence had been heard Mr Donnelly said there was no doubt that the accused had used language which he ought not to have used. Accused was under the influence of liquor at the time. He was sentenced to one month's imprisonment. Miscellaneous. — John Patterson was charged with having, on April 28, driven a vehicle over the Windmill Eoad railway crossing while an engine p was approaching. Defendant admitted the offence and was fined 20s with costs <£1 12s. — John M'Namara, for allowing a chimney in the City Hotel to catch fire, was fined ss, with costs 7s. — Edward Dethier and Frederick Strong were charged, on the information of James Felgate, with having, on May 9, at Watsonville, cruelly illtreated a donkey by beating it with a stick. Mr Bishop appeared for the informant. Messrs Weston and Byrne appeared for the defendants, who pleaded not guilty. The case was dismissed, the defendants not being asked to state their defence. Costs, £2 12s, were given against the defendants.
