UNWHOLESOME MEAT.

AN IMPENDING PROSECUTION.

It having come to the knowledge of one of the city inspectors that a cow had died from what he believed to be disease, he instituted inquiries, vfith the result that he obtained • information to the effect that part of the carcase had found its way to a butcher. A veterinary surgeon was called in, the body of the cow was exhumed, and a post-mortem examination proved that the lungs of the animal were badly affected with tuberculosis. Portions corresponding with those found upon the premises of the butcher were missing from the carcase, but it is said that the butcher made a statement- that his intention was to boil the meat down for chicken feed. An information was sworn yesterday afte.rno.on against the butcher for being in possession of meat unfit for luunan food, and the case will be heard on Thursday next;

The recent election in Auckland was interesting, inasmuch as it gave the public an opportunity of seeiDg how far the local newspapers - will go in urging their favourite's claims to the support of the "free and independent." No one fact was recorded by either side that was not denied, or qualified, or misrepresented by the other. Perhaps Eiuile Zola's suggestion to let every article carry a signature would have a salutary, effect ; but alas ! we do not in New Zealand limit our "guiding power" to leading articles. We distort facts, we wilfully ignore current events, in order to bring about that consummation — the election of " our party " man. There is one subject both sides agree on, and that is that Vanity Fair Cigarettes are worthy of the confidence of both parties.
