Letters were read from the AgentGeneral in England respecting the November examinations, 1895; from Professor Strong, examiner in French, forwarding ' certain lists and books ; also one from the 1 Students' Association of the University of Otago respecting the examination in L November, 1895. They were referred to the Committee on Authors and Periods. The Vice-Chancellor brought up an interim 1 report of the Committee on Correspondence 1 with the Minister of Education, the petii tion of the senior scholar of 1894, and on . centres of examination. Sir R. Stout brought up a report on law questions, the Rev W. J. Habens that of the professors regarding the subjects of the B.A. and B.Sc. pass examinations, Professor Brown that of the committee on the statute regarding the luxhibition of 1851 scholarship. Discussion on the reports was adjourned until to-morrow. Letters from the Auckland Graduates' Association and from the Professor of English in the University of Otago were referred to the Committee on Authors and Periods. WELLINGTON, March 3. The University Senate resumed this morning. The Bowen prize of 1895 was awarded to William Wilson, an undergraduate of the University at Canterbury i College. The report of the Finance Comi mittee was considered. It showed that the , balance at credit of the general account on Jan. 1, 1896, was .£2400, of which .£IOOO was invested in 6 per cent debentures, £951 in the hands of the agent in England, and * the balance in the bank and in ,-hand i was £458. The accumulated capital of the scholarship account amounted, on Jan. 1, '. 1896, to .£12,324, of whioh. ,£IO,OOO was lent on mortgage at 6 per cent, .£1515 lent on mortgage .at 6. per cent,; £550 placed on interest at 4 per cent, and the balance was > in the bank. ' The accumulated capital of the Tinline scholarship fund was £1366, of s which £1200 was invested on mort- , gage at 6. per cent, and £150 placed ! on fixed deposit at 5 per cent, the i balance being in the bank. The I committee recommended that ten junior i scholarships of the value of £40 each, and I five junior scholarships of the value of £30 , each should be offered for competition , in 1896. The report was adopted. The • following were admitted to the ad eundem degree of Master of Arts: — Bishop Julius, Oxford; Bishop Wallis, Cambridge; George D. Braik, Edinburgh; H. Reve and M. Cowie, Cambridge ; A. M'Arthur, Melbourne. A. B.Boyd, Oxford, was admitted to the ad eundem degree of Bachelor of Medicine. On the petition of the senior scholars of 1894, the committee recommended that the petitioner having obtained firstclass honours, and h-iving, also received from the professors of his! college a certificate of having passed the practical examination as enacted in the statute "Honours im Arts," his prayer for the payment of £25, being the remaining moiety of his scholarship, be acceded to. With regard to centres of examination, it was decided that the Chancellor be at liberty to lower the minimum number (15) of candidates that are to present themselves for examination before an examination centre is established, if the local candidates make up the fees to the amount that must be paid by fifteen matriculation candidates.
