THE FUNERALS.
The funerals of the late Messrs W. F. Warner and James Murray took place yesterday, starting from the New Brighton Hotel. About one o'clock a large crowd assembled outside the hotel, and shortly after half-past one, when the procession left, practically the whole of the New Brighton residents had turned out to witness the funerals. Flags were at half-mast in the township, the shops were closed, and the main street was lined with people as the cortege passed along. The followers of both funerals formed one procession as they passed through the township, and besides the two hearses, four mourning coaches and a drag, there were about forty other conveyances taking part. At the Mile Hoa— the two funerals separated, that of Mr Warner passing along the. Mile Road, alongside the river, to the Commercial Hotel vi& the East Belt and Worcester Street. That of Mr Murray went direct to the Linwood Cemetery, where the body was interred in the Catholic portion of the cemetery, Father Marnane officiating. The coffin was covered' with wreaths. Messrs E. Wells, A. Mlntyre, J. Malcolmson and W. Irvine were pall-bearers, and Messrs S. Hardy, J. Marshall, T. Thomas, W. Evans, A. Thomas, H. Manning, representing the New Brighton Sailing and Fishing Clubs, carried the coffin to the grave. Among those present "were: — Messrs J. __. Little, ,C. P. : Hulbert, W. Brice, S. Brice, R. C. The procession which continued with the funeral of Mr Warner was largely augmented as it neared the town, and numbered about forty carriages when it reached the hotel a few minutes after., three o'clock. During the day flags had : been at half-mast throughout the . . city, and about three o'clock a large number of shops closed, more especially on the line of the route, and for a time business was practically suspended. Early in the afternoon people began to assemble in Cathedral Square and when the cortige came in sight several thousands were gathered there. As the procession passed the hotel hundreds joined in. Ravenhill and J. Dalwood. The route taken was across the Square to Worcester Street and by Osford Terrace to the Eiccarton Eoad. As the procession passed along the Riccarton Road it comprised qiiite ninety vehicles and was fully a mile in length. At the churchyard the Rev W. A. Pascoe, vicar of Avonside, and the Rev H. T. P. Winter, vicar of Riccarton, read the burial service. A large crowd assembled in the churchyard, inclxiding a large number of Riccarton residents and a great' many prominent Christchurch citizens. The coffin and grave were decked with wreaths, and the Union Jack was placed over the coffin. The pall-bearers were Messrs E. C. Bishop, J. Thornton, Sefton, Robb,' Walker and Hawker (New Brighton Fishing Club), and Messrs G. Finday, C. Curtis, F. Plunket and F. W. Keats (New Brighton Sailine Club). . • & , Amongst those who sent wreaths were the following :— Hon R.J. Seddon, representing the Ministry, the Christchurch Sailing Club, the New Brighton Sailing Club, the New Brighton Fishing Club, the employes of Warner's Hotel, tlse employes of Coker's Hotel, the Lyttelton Times and Star companionship, Miss Coker, Mr and Mrs G. H. Mason, Mr and Mrs White, Mr and Mrs Thomas Popham, Mrs Rosewarne and Mrs Turner, Mrs P. Selig, Mrs M'lntyre, Mrs Euddenklau, Mrs and Misses Clark, Mr and Mrs Gundersen, Mr and Mrs J^Carl and family, Mr and Mrs N. Wolfe, Mr and Mrs W. H. Porter, Misses Allan. Mr and Mrs F. J. Smith and family, Mr and Mrs Henry Sawtell, Mrs MelHsh and Mr K. Mellish. Mr Allan, manager of Warner's Hotel, has received a number of telegrams from all parts of the colony, as well as from Australia, expressing regret and sympathy in connection with the accident. One telegram was from the Hon E. J. Seddon, and several cables have been received from Melbourne.
