The complete insurances on the Turanganui Hotel fire on Saturday are : — On the hotel— Phoenix, .£500; Manchester, .£SOO (,£250 reinsured with the London and Lancashire) ; stock and furniture—Standard, .£500; Norwich Union, «£2OO. The Manchester office had .£l5O on the Public Hall. The British Empire Hotel narrowly escaped destruction during Saturday night, a fire under the staircase being discovered just in time. DANNEVIRKE, Feb. 29. Bush fires have sprung up in Makotuku and Ormondville. M'Leod's sawmill at Makotuku has been burned down. High winds spread the bush fires at Norsewood, and several houses have been destroyed. WAIPAWA, Feb. 29. Extensive bush fires are raging in the Makaretu district. A number of settlers' dwellings have been destroyed, also the Ashley-Clinton schoolhouse and a number of sheep. A house belonging to Mr Etherington, a farmer residing near Wilson's mill, Ohoka, was burned down on Sunday at noon, while he was away at Sefton. Mrs Etherington noticed the smoke, and suddenly the place was in flames. Nothing was saved. Some money was in the house and could not be got out. There is an insurance on the building, which was old.
