ROAD BOARDS.

SPRINGS. Ah ordinary meeting of this Board was held' yesterday,; present— Messrs John Wolfe (chairman), Marshall, Pannett and Geddis. Correspondence was received from — Mr A. Roscoe, asking the Board to improve the outlet of Powell's drain. Consideration was deferred till next meeting. Prom a widow in the district, asking the Board to use its influence in obtaining relief for her family. She stated that the Charitable Aid Board had discontinued its allowance. The Board decided to ascertain particulars, and the reasons why the rations , had been withdrawn. Prom Messrs G. Murray and others, drawing the Board's attention to the state of the approach to the Government bridge over the river Halswell. The matter was referred to the Clerk. From the Commissioner of Taxes, Wellington, intimating that a voucher had been forwarded to the Treasury for the payment of .£6B 9s, 75 per cent of subsidy on rates. Prom the Selwyn County Council forwarding copy of a petition received from settlers on the lake requesting a bridge over the canal. It was resolved that the Council should be informed that the Board had no funds available for the purpose. Prom the Public Trustee, asking for particulars of unclaimed sections in the township of Lincoln. The request had been complied with. The Board was informed that considerable damage had been done to Day's Eoad by a traction engine in hauling grain, and it was decided to take immediate action to recover the amount necessary for repairs. It was resolved that Mr W. H. Montgomery, member for the district, should be asked to introduce into the House of Representatives a Bill prohibiting traffic by road engines drawing heavy loads. The Overseer's report was considered, and it was decided to call tenders for forming 100 chains of road on the lake towards Rabbit Island, and that the contractor for drains on the lake should be requested to proceed with the work. It was reported that several bridges had been damaged during the month, and that it was necessary to renew one at Ellesmere, which the Board decided to inspect. The Clerk was instructed to take immediate action to recover outstanding rates, with 10 per cent added. The pay-sheet (.£254 10s lOd) was passed for payment, and the meeting closed.
