... SECOND COLOSSAL SALE COMMENCES TO-DAT, FOR ONE MONTH ONLY. SEE CATALOGUES FOE PEICES. KIENNETH, MATHESON & CO., DRAPERS AND CLOTHIERS, HIGH STREET " THE HALL," CHRISTCHURCH.

SUNDAY TRADING. A PINE OF .£lO, At Lyttelton this morning Charles Hickson was charged -with supplying liquor to George Nelson and — Espling on Sunday, Jan. 26. The case was heard at Lyttelton oh Peb. 12, before Mr E. Beetham, S.M., who reserved judgment . till to-day. Mr Deacon appeared foi* the defendant. The judgment was as follows : — " The deI fendant is charged on two informations with selling liquor on Sunday, Jan. 26, to two men— Nelson and Espling. The defence is that the liquor was given and no money passed. Constable Moore while on duly atLyttelton ontheabove date observed the two men crossing the road to the Eoyal Hotel. He had some conversation with them and watched them go to the side door of the Albion, kept by the defendant, followed them up, and found ihem drinking from two pint pots of beer, supplied by the defendant, who was inside the bar. The men were drinking the beer at the door j I leading from the bar into the tap-room. The defendant admitted to the constable j that he had supplied the men with the beer, but stated that he did not take any money for it. The defendant, in his evidence before the Court, made a similar j admission, and in answer to a question by the police, stated that it was on account of Nelson being a customer that he gave him the two drinks. In answer to a question by his counsel he further stated that if Nelson, had not been in the habit of coming to his house he would not have given him the beer. The constable says that Espling was under the influence of liquor when he saw him. The evidence discloses an ordinary case of Sunday trading. I do not believe the evidence of the defendant, or the evidence of Nelson, when they state that the beer was a gift;. I hold that the transaction was one in the nature of a sale, in terms of the 170 th Bection of the. Act. I will treat the occurrence as practically one offence, and convict on the information charging the defendant . with, selling liquor to Nelson. The defendant is fined .£lO and costs. The license is. en- ; dorsed by law." 7 { . i.. . ==z ' „' . Morris-tube Shooting.— The return Morris-tube match between teams repre-' senting H.M.S.
