BOROUGH COUNCILS.
♦■ . ST ALBANS. A meeting of the St Albans Borough Council was held last evening; present— The Mayor (Mr F. Waymouth), Councillors Money, Wake, Glass, Morgan, Charlewood, Millton and Keig. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Neate and Cook. The Mayor- suggested that the attention of the Government should be directed to the anomalous position in which suburban bodies were placed under the Shops Hours Act, as the City Council's voting power under the Act exceeded the whole of the adjoining districts. Consequently the suburban bodies might as well be unrepresented at the meeting. A motion in the direction indicated, and inviting the co-operation of other boroughs in the matter was carried, on the motion of Councillor Wake, seconded by Councillor Glass. :The Finance Committee reported that since last meeting the receipts had been .£584 18s 2d, and the expenditure £433 4s ld. The debit balance at the bank was £175 14s sd. It was recommended that the usual steps should be taken to recover unpaid rates. The report was adopted. The Workp Committee recommended that the question of the rate of wages should be referred to a committee consisting of the Chairman of the various committees and the Mayor, and that a working foreman should be advertised for to relieve Mr Beatson and take charge of the day labour. The first clause was adopted. The latter clause was also referred to the .special* committee ; the Works Committee being authorised to employ necessary extra labour. . After transacting routine business the meeting closed.
