CRICKET.
■• ■ • " CANTERBURY v. QTAGO. [Per Peess Association.] DUNEDIN, Feb:ls. There, is perfect weather for the beginning of the Interprovincial Cricket Match, and a fast wicket was prepared. Canterbury won the toss and the homp team took the field at eleven o'clock. G-len> Otago, and Smith, secretary of the New Zealand Cricket Council, umpired. Cuff and Harman were the pioneer, batsmen. Downes bowled from the pavilion end, the field being placed for the off theory. Off the fourth ball Harman gave Hope a difficult chance in tho slips, which was not accepted. Fisher bowled from the opposite end; Cuff putting the ball to the boundary. Thanks to Harman, ten was signalled, and Cuff again sent Fisher to the boundary. At 20 Downes clean bowled Cuff, who had 14 to his credit. De Jdaus' first contribution was a cut for 4, but in trying a draw to leg De Maus played Fisher on. 27 — 2 — 5. Wilding partnered Harman, and, the incomer was responsible for 30 appearing. Wilding, becoming aggressive, sent 40 lap, which caused Fisher to give way to Parker, and in his second over got Wilding, who played right round the ball. 44—3 — 18. Fowke filled the breach. Play became monotonous till Fowke infused a little well-needed life into the game by Kfting Parier to the pavilion for 4, and Harman getting another 4 for a leg-glance off the same bowjer, 60 was signalled. Fisher resumed at his former end, and Fowke fell a prey to his third ball. 62 — 4—6, and Bidley went in. For a leg-bye 4 was ran. Harman gave a very hard chance to Boddington, which was ndt taken, and .Eidley scored 3 for a skier. Harman's time had now come, Spraggon catching hiiii off Downes. The retiring batsman played a most useful, though somewhat lucky, innings. 72 — 5 -r--24 *was telegraphed as Clark supplied the vacancy. The incomer opened his account with a snick off Fisher, four resulting; but after he had added another single, Haydon, the wicket-keeper, snapped him up off Downes. Six for 78 was a poor score on such a wicket. D. Eeese got his first from Downes away for 3, but Fisher got him in the next over, and 81 — 7 — 3 was the score at the lunch adjournment, Ridley not out 5, bye 1, legbyes 4. Ridley and T. W. Reese made things merry on resuming, and after ten minutes play the century was hoisted. At 109 Hope supplanted Fisher, but at 116 gave way to Parker. T. Eeese, not out 26, ,' Eidley, not'out 16.
