At the inquest on the body of James Stokes, cab-driver, the , jury returned an open verdict that deceased met his death by injuries to hia. head, but how these were given there was iio direct evidence to show. Alexander comes up atthe Police Court to-morrow on a charge of manslaughter, when probably the evidence will r>e gone into again. Bush fires at Opanake swept down to the township. Atone time the buiidinga along. the railway line were in great danger, but the line and buildings were saved by great exertions, also the tram line and bridge. The Kauri Timber Company sustained some loss. I The Natives at Lake Botornahhve re- { ceived notice that if they persist in netting : trout they will be prosecuted.
