PRESBYTERIAN ASSEMBLY.
-»— [Per Pbess Association.! "WELLINGTON, F^b. 12. The Presbyterian Assembly resumed this morning. The Rev Stubbs, who brought a commission from the Free Church of Scotland, was associated with the Assembly. The report of the committee on the state of religion and morals was brought up. : It suggested that the Assembly, should authoritatively declare thatchurch lotteries are inexpedient and should be discountenanced at sales of work; also that steps should be taken to get Mr W. Hutchison's Restraint on Incitement to Betting Bill introduced into Parliament next session,, and that a petition to Parliament in favour of the measure should be drawn up. The report provoked a long discussion. On the subject of' church lotteries the Rev Treadwell ("Wanganui) moved as an amendment to the committee's suggestion, that the Assembly distinctly declares that it disapproves in toto of the use of lotteries for raising money in aid of church objects, and earnestly directs the officers of congregations of the Church not to employ such means. The amendment was carried by a large majority.
