TIMARU HARBOUR BOARD.

•■ — • :—- --[FBOM OUB OWN COBBESPONDENT.] TIMAEU, Feb. 11. The Harbour Board to-day, at a full meeting, reoeived thirteen applications for the post of resident engineer. The Board spent some hours over them, and the meeting was rather disorderly. 'Mr F. W. Marchant, Timaru, who asked a year, and Mr H. W. Young, Greymouth, late of the Midland Eailway (.£425) were sue- i cessively proposed and rejected, and the Board separated without' coming to a j decision. An estimate of the receipts and i expenditure for the coming 'year showed to be made up by a rate, but the Board will levy .£6OOO, hoping to make up the balance by receipts over the estimate. An application for a rebate on the charge of thirty shillings per day on the ship InvercargiU, seventy days at the wharf, was not entertained. O'Connor 'expressed surprise that the pump dredge was; not giving better results, as one in use at Albany was doing immensely more work, a dredge costing .£24,000 removing 250,000 cubic yards in six months. It was resolved to claim the underwriters for a share of the cost of repairing ithe recent accident to the pump dredge, whereby thesuction pipe stuck in the bottom and broke off.
