KAIAPOI BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the above Council was hold last evening ; present — The- Mayor, and Councillors Weston, Hopkins, Clark, Drabble^ Bugg, Simpson and Blakeley. ' Leave of absence was granted to Councillors. Mathews and Doubleday. Correspondence was read from ■ the Treasury, Wellington, advising the Council that the jnterest on the bridge loan and sinking fund, .£72 16s lOd, was due. Deferred till -next meeting. The Mre Prevention Committee reported tliat two platforms for the Brigade's practice had been erected. The Finance Committee reported — Receipts ,£8 Os 6d, debit balance £644 17s lid, and recommended accounts to £53 13s 8d for payment. Adopted. The surveyor's report was adopted ; there was still .£BO outstanding in rates, and the Council agreed to allow till Feb. 1 for payment. An application from the Secretary of the Fire Brigade for £2 19s 6d for longservice medals was granted. Applications for licenses for the Oddfellows' Hall and the Women's Christian Temperance Union were granted. A requisition from ratepayers in Hugh Street for asphalt footpaths, and agreeing to pay half the cost, was accepted ; and it was decided to make a crossing from Marshall's to the swingbridge. The Lighting Committee recommended that the lamps at Doubleday's, Hugh Street, and at Mather's Corner, be put into use.- Agreed to. Councillor Simpson gave notice of motion to rescind a motion passed at a former meeting relative to the lighting of lamps. Councillor Clark complained that the asphalting in Kaiapoi was not so permanent as that at Christchurch, Rangiora and Akaroa, and he thought that an expert should be employed. The Works Committee agreed to consider the matter. The Mayor brought up the. subject of the half-holiday and closing- shops at nine o'clock on Saturday nights, and the matter was deferred till next Council night. >Tho proceedings then terminated.
