MESSAGE FROM THE QUEEN.
THE NEW FLYING SQUADRON.

The Queen sent a message to President Kruger in which she expressed herself gratified at his decision to set free the prisoners captured at Kr tiger's dorp, and hoped that the negotiations for a peaceful settlement would be conducted in a harmonious manner, , .'....,,. .The Dutch- African Society at Amsterdam has issued a manifesto appealing to England to respect the autonomy of a weaker nation. . Portugal maintains neutrality in regard to the Transvaal, and will not permit German or British military forces to land and traverse Portuguese territory. Six torpedo destroyers have been added to the new flying squadron and bix to the Channel fleet.
The Times correspondent wires that the feeling in Johannesburg is that Dr Jameson's approach was untimely, and that he would have been unable to help the Uitlanders, owing to the declaration of an armistice pending Sir H. Kobinson^s arrival.
The Boers at Kruger's Dorp Lad an impregnable position behind rocks, while Dr Jameson's men had to tight from the ooen plain. PEETOEIA, Jan. 8. A Boer officer narrowly prevented one of. his- men from shooting Dr Jameson on the march from Kruger's dorp. The Boers fed the starving prisoners on the battlefield, and admit the gallantry displayed by Dr Jameson's party throughout the fight. Many of the Uitlandfors declare that they would willingly have fought under the English flag, though they did not desire a second republic. CAPETOWN, Jan. 8. The Chartered Company has re-, quested the Government to make an inquiry into the circumstances which led up to Dr Jameson's expedition. The Boers assert that they possess written evidence of the existence of a plot to annex the Trans vati!.
