THE WEATHER.
The nor'-wester which blew strongly '* across South Canterbury on Monday afternoon and evening somewhat, abated before darky but continued to blow .till early morning. Besides doing considerable damage to gardens and orchards, it is reported that heavy patches of grain crops were knocked down by it.
The crops in the Woodend district do , not appear to have suffered to nny extent, -. but in the Eyreton district#te oats seem to have sustained considerable damage. In several cases they have been completely cutoff, and can only be used as chaffi A strong nor'-wester blew all day at Temuka ;on Monday, .and some -little , .damage was done\to the crops. Barley suffered most, in some cases the head*, being thiashod off. Generally speaking, however, the damage is only prospective, ', the -''danger being that the grain may be bruised and stunted. A few trees were blown down,- and. orchards suffered.
