ORGAN RECITAL.
Mr Timson, organist of Pixs.' Church, Dunedin, gave an organ recital in f the Cathedral last night, which cannot,.perhaps, be better described thanas a highly finishedand delightfulperformance of awellselected programme. Mr Timson's execution showed the most thorough and intimate acquaintance with the worksof the masters from whom his pieces were selected, while his delicacy of touch in the lighter passages, his vigour and judgment in heavier pa&s and the deep feeling which characterised his playing throughout were all evidences of a thorough mastery of his instrument. Amongst the best of the selections chosen by Mr Timson a few may be noticed. Smart's "Solemn March" was splendidly, played, its majestic grandeur being done full -justice to by the organist. M. Guilmant's sonata in D minor, the largo c maestoso leading to allegro, was given in an impressive manner ; the pastorale was beautifully played, while the rendering of the difficult but brilliant alUgro assai was ■undoubtedly a fine performance. But the
best piece of the evening was Grison's
-*' Communion in F." The quaint and • beautiful melody, with a charming rippling accompaniment, was most delicately treated and it had but one fault— brevity. Mr Timson's concluding number, Handel's
•? Dettingen Te Deum " waa a fitting conclusion to one of the best recitals heard in the Cathedral. Mr iE. Lovell sang the recitative and air "Comfort Te" and'^Vry Valley," and the recitative "Te People rend your Hearts" with the air "If with all Tour Hearts " from Elijah, and Stainer's " King 'Ever Glorious " from The Crucifixion. The ■ offertory, which wag in aid of the fund for defraying the cost of repairs to the organ, realised <£8 4s Bd. '
