CORRESPONDENCE.
TAYLOE OE SCOTT ? TO THE EDITOR.
Sir, — As one who believes in progressive Liberal legislation, I am somewhat puzzled as to who I am to vote for at the approaching election v for Mr Eeeves's successor. The Government has induced Mr J: L. Sccitt, notwithstanding his refusal of last week to run, to enter the lists against Mr T. E. Taylor, who has been in the field in the Liberal and prohibition interests for some weeks. 'This is doubtless an attempt to split the .temperance vote and secure I the support of the Conservative Party, I whose Sections the Ministry seem determined to win. What is Mr Scott's connection with the banking interests controlled by the Government ? Is the Government to be permitted to force upon the Christchurch electors a colourless representative as they did in Auckland ? In that city a genuine Eadical, Mr Fawcus, was in the field, and was chosen by twenty-two to two votes of the Labour organisations, but by cajolery and other methods was compelled to retire to make room for a Conservative. Mr T. E. Taylor's power of expressing the people's views is admitted by his strongest opponent, his sympathy with the mass of the people is real, and his efforts to destroy one of the most injurious monopolies that bar the people's progress to a high level of living, entitle him to the hearty support of every man and woman who wants to make the lot of their children brighter than has been their own. The personnel of the deputation who waited upon Mr Scott would prove to thg Labour party that he cannot serve them and serve his friends at . the same time. — I am, &c, EYES OPEN.
