SEVERE NOR'-WESTER.
On Saturday afternoon Christchurch was visited by the most violent nor'-wester experienced this summer. The temperature was very high, and from just before two o'clock until about five the wind blew with great strength, at times rising to the force of a hurricane. Clouds of dust, mingled with fine shingle, filled the air, and the afternoon will be remembered as one of the most unpleasant ever known here. Considerable damage was done to orchards, large quantities of the unripe fruit having been blown down. Several willow and other trees had branches torn off, and some trees were blown down altogether. Outhouses and windows also suffered to a small extent. About half-past nine at night a welcome shower came on. For about an hour it rained hard. The downpour then slackened, and soon afterwards ceased. Yesterday the weather was beautifully fine.
During Saturday's gale, a brick wall of Messrs Bowman's building in Victoria Street, which' was recently destroyed by fire, was blown down. The wall came with a crash on to an adjoining bootmaker's shop, completely wrecking . the shop and contents. . Fortunately the shoemaker Himself was in the middle of the street at the timel
