HEAVY GALE AT "WELLINGTON. [Per Press Association.] WELLINGTON, Jan. 5.

One of the. strongest blows experienced here for some time took place between eight o'clock last night and midnight. On Friday evening a strong nor'-wester set in, and gradually increased until last night, when it blew with hurricane force. At midnight there were heavy peals of thunder, with vivid lightning and a downpour of rain. Subsequently the weather began to improve, and to-day there is 'a fresh nor'wester, with a bright sun. Very little damage was done. In some places trees were uprooted and fences levelled, while in exposed parts glass suffered to some extent. HOKITIKA, Jan. 5.

The gale has done a great deal of damage ' in the country districts. At 'Stafford, two churches and several buildings were partially unroofed.
