LIGHTHOUSE ON THE SOUTHERN ISLANDS.
Some time ago the Governments of some of the Australian Colonies and New Zealand were in communication with regard to the erection of a lighthouse on one of ;the islands lying to the south of New Zealand, but owing ; to the depression in "Victoria that colony was unable to see its way to contribute towards the cost. With the improvement of affairs there negotiations have been renewed, and by the Hinemoa, which leaves for the Auckland and Snares Islands towards the end of the month, Mr. Hales,' of ; the Public Works ; Department, and Captain- Allman, Nautical Adviser to the Government, will proceed to select a suitable site for the lighthouse, the cost -to be borne by the colonies, interested.
