EVENING SITTING.

The Synod resumed at 7.30 p.m. Sir John Hall moved that the Synod should consent to an alteration of the existing boundaries between the dioceses of Christohurch and Nelson. He said that the motion dealt with the districts of Amuri and Cheviot. Geographically, naturally, socially and commercially the Amuri District was part bf Canterbury. Communication between it and Christohurch was eaßy and regular, and Christchuroh, in fact, was the centre of this district, whereats communication wiih Nelson waß extremely tardy. It was obviously undesirable that portions of the diocese so removed and so inaccessible from Nelson should form part of Nelson. The proposal was Bubject to the approval of the Bishop ofNelßon. Mr B. J. S. Harman seoonded the motion. . jft, . , In answer to the Eev C. A. Tobin, the Bißhop stated that the proposed new boundary did not include Kaikoura. The Bishop Baid the district referred to was almost unreachable from Nelson. It included Hanmer Plains, Culverden and Waiau, and coald bo reached from Chriatchuroh in a day and a half, whereas it would take a much longer period to reach, it from Nelson. He did not wish the Synod to consider whether it would entail extra wort on him, but to consider their people in and around Cheviot. He hoped that as a matter of duty the Synod would pass thiß motion. The Rev H. E. Ensor supported the motion, which was carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr H. B. Webb, it was resolved that the Church Property Trustees should be authorised to place at the disposal of the Standing Committee dnring the current year the sum of .£IOO from the surplus income of the Bishopric Estate, to be applied in making provision for the duties of invalided clergy. On the motion of Mr H. D. Andrews, it was reßOlved that the parish of Governor's Bay should be made a parochial district. It was pointed out that a general meeting of parishioners of the parish of Governor's Bay had expressed a desire by formal resolution that the parish should' be made a parochial district, with a view to the appointment of local church officers in the several subdistricts. On the motion of Canon Knowles, the Synod confirmed the appointment by the Standing Committee of Mr G. Dunnage as a Church Property Trustee. Canon Knowleß moved— " That the sum of £2808, to be placed at the disposal of the Synod by the Church Property Trustees for the current year, be appropriated as follows : — For equal grants, not exceeding £50 each, to such cures- and assistant curacies as are or may be entitled thereto, and an equal sum for the work of the public institutions— >j224OO. For allow* ances in lieu of parsonages in the cures entitled thereto— £loß. For promoting religious education : among the yoang within the diocese— £loo. For diocesan expenses, in accordance with .financial regulation No. lt— £2oo." ..-..-. Mr J.M. Bat ham seconded the motion, which was carried. On -the . motion of jbfae Dean of Chriatchurch, seconded by Sir John Hall, it was resolved that the thanks of the Synod should be accorded, to the Bishop for the address delivered by him at the Cathedral on the opening day of Synod, and that he should be requested to have it printed among the synodicai documents. A motion, expressing the Synod's sense of the great losb the Church of New Zealand bad experienced in the death of the late Dr Suter, Bishop of Nelson, and of appreciation of his efforts in connection with the establishment of the Board of Theological Studies, was carried unanimously, the members of Synod standing while the Bishop put it to the meeting. The question of a grant of £25 from the Church Mißßion Fund to the New Zealand Church News for editorial expenses, was deferred till to-morrow. A motion by the Bey E. A. Scott that it should be an instruction to the Standing Committee to alter the existing constitution in the direction of procuring facilities for purging the roll of church members, was agreed to. The Bey S. Hinson moved that the Synod should request hia Lordship the Bishop to address a pastoral letter to the laity of his diocese upon the subject of increased contributions for religious purposes.
