AFTERNOON SITTING. The Synod resumed at 4 p.m., the Bishop of Christohurch in the chair. The report, which recommended several amendments, was read, and on the motion of the v ßishop was ordered to be printed. Leave was given to Mr Brittan to introduce a Bill to amend the Interpretation Statute, 1891. The Bill was read a firat time, and the second reading and consideration in committee were made an Order of the Day for Friday. Mr H. D. Andrews obtained leave to introduce a Bill to enact a statute for the amendment of the Diocesan Synod Election Statute, 1891. The Bill was read a first time, and the second reading and consideration in committee were made, an Order of the Day for Friday. The Bey Stanley Hinson moved: — "That a grant of £25 be made from the general estate towards the building of a church in Fairlie." He said the people in the district had taken up the matter of erecting a church very heartily indeed, and if the Synod granted this small Bum he felt sure that there would be very little difficulty in finding the balance. The Bey L. C. Brady seconded the motion. ' After some discussion, the Bishop said he felt sure that Fairlia had a claim on the sympathy of the Synod in this matter. The diatriofc was growing in size, and the people had selected a very good site for . their church. Their claim was an excep- ' tional one, and he hoped the Synod would find some means by which the grant might be made. The motion was then put and lost on a division :— Ayes : Clergy 27, laity 16. Noes : Clergy 14, laity 22. - On the motion of the Dean of Christchurch, Standing Order No. 34 was suspended to enable him to introduce a motion with reference to the Bishop's address. The Synod adjourned at 6 p.m. till 7.30 p.m.
