The retention of Chitral will cost twenty-five lakhs of rupees perannnm. A COMPROMISE. The proceedings against the officers of the new Oriental Bank have been compromised by the payment of £18.216. CITY OF MELBOURNE BANK. The London Committee of the City ; of Melbourne Bank is opposed to the Melbourne liquidator moving the Victorian Courtß. Failing compliance with the committee's demands, it is believed that Mr Stewart will be appointed to represent the British creditors. THE MELBOURNE LOAN. Messrs Laycock, Gtoodfellow and ! Bell state that they can get the whole of the Melbourne Board of Works loan subscribed at par, on condition that the interest is payable in London. They have already received application for £62,000, subject to this condition. THE HOUSE OF LORDS. Mr Gladstone denies that he ever advocated the abolition of the second Chamber. CRICKET. Colonel Shervington, formerly in the Malagasy service, has returned. He explains that the reason he left Madagascar was owing to the apathy of the Hova Government. He asked for twenty thousand men fully armed and equipped, but the authorities delayed providing them until it was useless. Otherwise he could easily have checked the French. JAPAN'S ASPIRATIONS. LONDON, August 14. The Daily News correspondent wires that the Japanese journals are insisting tb,at Japan's hope for the future lies in linking her destinies with those of the Anglo-Saxon race. England may be certain of Japan's support in the Eastern settlement. THE MEKONG. The Premier and M. Courcel, the French Ambassador, are consulting on the Mekong settlement. The French Press reports that Lord Salisbury insisted that the rights of England on the Upper Mekong must be respected. M. Courcel is represented as replying that France had not admitted the principle of a buffer State. He reminded Lord Salisbury that the Egyptian question had waited longer for settlement. RUSSIA AND JAPAN. ST PETEESBTJSG, Augubt 14. The relations between Russia and Japan are regarded as strained, owing to the determination of Japan to retain Corea. RUSSIA AND FRANCE. The Czar, in conferring the order of Yladimar on Baron Mohrenheim, the representative at Paris, said "Your activity in upholding the friendship between Russia and France, contributes to the general peace which is dear to my heart."
