Torletse, formerly of the Rttngiora Bifles, has joined the Lyttelton Naval Artillery as lieutenant. Chttboh Goim>.— A_very enjoyable concert was given by the members of St Andrew's Church Guild last evening. The programme, which consisted of Bongs, readings, dialogues and tableaux, was well carried out, and the audience was a large and appreciative one. Stdhnham Weslhtan Chueoh. — On Wednesday evening a very successful congregational "social" was held, presided over by the Bey W. Gk Parsonson. An excellent programme of musical items, tableaux, charades and recitations, arranged by Mr George Dal try, assisted by members of the choir, was given and thoroughly enjoyed by the large number present. In the intervals refreshments were handed tound. The proceedings were brought to s oloae by theßinging of the National Anthem. Mobbiß-Tub» Match.— A Morriß-tube match was held in the drillshed, Lyttelton, between teams of the Sydeuham Working Men's Club and the Lyttelkon Navals, resulting in a win for the latter by forty-five points. Times."— Prominent amongst the contents of this week's Canterbury Times are portraits of Dr and Mrs Stewart, victims of the massacre of mieeionaries in China, with an account of the work of the mission and the troubles whioh menaced those belonging to it. A striking portrait of the late Mr Justice Biohmond, with a sketch of his career, is also given. Other illustrations deal with euch diverse subjects as the latest fashions and trotting horses. Fiction includes four powerful short stories— or five, including one which appears in the Ladiea' Page. The articles in the various departments of the paper are ot the moat interesting character, and provide something instructive for every class of readers. Speoial mention may be made of the reports and reviews of the Grand National meeting and the Canterbury Trotting Club's meeting, and of the letters from Sydney and Melbourne correspondents, whioh now form a regular feature of this enterprising journal. In addition, subscribers receive the coupon for Part j YH. of "Beautiful Britain," and they will do well to lose no time in applying for the part, as preceding parts havo been speedily sold out, bo great has been the demand for this wonderful art publication. St John's, LtttbliTon.— A very successful " social " was given in the sohoolroom on Tuesday evening. The room was paoked, deipite the unfavourable weather, and Mr G. Laurenaon occupied the chair. The programme included songs by Misses Duncan and M'Gregor, Messrs Smart and Johnston, and two quartettes ; recitations by Messrs Johnston and Hean; comic songs by Mr W. Gilmoie; and a French horn Bolo'by Mr Barbour. In the interval refreshments weie handed round, after which the Mayor gave a Bhort address. Mrs Bromley presided at the piano. Votes of thanks to the performers concluded the proceedings. Stdbnhah Whslbyan Cotbch. —On Sunday evening last a memorial service waa held in this church in memory of the late Mr Herbert Bonnington, who was one of the trustees, and at variouß times held other important offices. The Rev W. G. Paraonaon preached a very impressive sermon from the words,* " In my Father's house ate many mansions," &c. There was a large congregation! The choir and orchestra, under Mr George Daltry, rendered special music. Miss Billens sang "He Wipes the Tear From Every Eye," and Miaa Watson Bang «' The Reaper and the Flowers." The service concluded by the playing of the "Dead March in Saul." Machiwhbt TsiAi. — A trial of the Hornaby-Ackroyd kerosene engine was held at the Canterbury Foundry yesterday in the presence, of a large number of farmers and others interested, and entire satisfaction was expressed with the working of the|engine. Messrs Anderson Bros, are agenta for Messrs Hornßby for the South Island of New Zealand, and the engine under notice is a li-horse-power portable imported by them for Mr Job Oaboroo to drive his well-sinking plant. These engines are made in varii as sizes up to 40-horse-power, and their being no rfok of fire, are very suitable for driving xjiiftffcuttera and threshing-machines. They hay« gained a number of first prizes at sgrioutKiral shows in England, and are extremely economical in their consumption of fuel.

North Belt Litebabt Society.— There wai a good attendance, considering the state of the weather, at the lecture on "Charles Dickens" delivered by Mr I Adama at the North Belt Church on I Tuesday evening. The early straggles of I Dickens to make a name for himself in literature, the principal works he published when success was attained, and the chief characters in those works, were all touched on by the lecturer. Selections from "Pickwick Papers," "Old Curiosity Shop" and "Dombey and Son" were' read to illustrate hia humour, pathoß and intimate knowledge of bharaoter. During an interval songa were Bung by Miss Wilkinson and Mr Rosewarne, and at the close a hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mr Adams for hia interesting lecture. Chbistchukch Horticultural Society. A meeting of the committee of the Christchurch Horticultural Society was held last night ; present— Messrs Mitchell, Guntrip, Carpenter, Wilson, Allen, Craw and Donald (in the chair). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs H. R. Webb, T. Gordon, Palmer and Clark. It was decided to hold the bulb and camellia show at the Art Gallery on Sept. 12. The following gentlemen, subject to their approval, were appointed ]udgea : — Messrs C. A. C. Hardy, A. W. Bennetts. J. G. Davis and W. T. Mitchell. Messrs Guntrip and Carpenter were appointed stewards, and Messrs Donald, Wilson, Craw, Allen, Carpenter, Mitchell, Clark and Guntrip doorkeepers. After arranging minor details the meeting closed. National Association. — A meeting of the Council of the National Association waa held in Morten's Buildings on Wednesday evening, when there waa a full attendance, the President in the chair. Several new members were elected and a large amount of routine business was transacted, after which the tariff was diecussed. The Council expressed its satisfaction that the Colonial Treasurer had intimated that opportunities would be afforded in cdmmittee to bo amend the tariff that apparent excessive duties on several articles would be modified. Further action was deferred until the definite decision of the Government respecting the tariff was ascertained. A number of Bills at present before Parliament were discussed, and regret was expressed at the interference with trade that characterised many of them. The meeting then adjourned until Thursday next.
