School Committees.
» ■ — The ordinary monthly meeting of the Southbridge School Committee was held on Monday evening ; present— Dr Withers (in the cbair), Messrs Marqoand, Hill, Hibberd, Burns, Webster ana Hampton. The master's report waa read, showing the number on the roll to be 250, and the average attendance 180. The planting of trees on Arbor Day was left in the hands of the Visiting Committee. Mr fi. Webster moved— "That thia committee deeply regrets the sudden death of Mr J. V. Colborne-Veel, and thinks that the cause of education in Canterbury has Buffered considerably thereby." As a former chairman of the School Committee he had had many dealings with the late Mr Veel, and he had known him to be one of the best friends of education in Canterbury. Mr K. C. Burns seconded the motion, which was carried unanimously. The Flax ton School Committee met on August 5; present— Messrs J. V. Chatterton (chairman), Doidge, .Lancaster, Clothier, Grant and Wright. The master's report showed— Number on roll 94, average attendance 70. It was reeolved — "That this committee cxy.roßsea its deep regrot at the sudden death of Mr J. V. ColborneVeel." It waa decided to give prizes as usual.
