Timaru Harbour Board.
The monthly meeting of the Timaru Harbour Board was held yesterday. The Chairman reported the sale of the, tug Mana to the Westport Harbour Board at £8500, and spoke of the valuable assistance given by Mr Evans in the negotiations. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr Evans for bis assistance in the matter. The Chairman also reported on certain negotiations with the local agent and the Cbristchurch manager of the Accident Insurance Company relative to the insurance of the Board's employe's. After a good deal of discußßion, it was resolved that if it was found that the course is legal the Chairman should close with the terms offered by the Insurance Company. Correspondence with the consulting engineer (Mr Maxwell) was read. He asked that a careful standard survey of the harbour and roadstead should be made, and sent specifications of what was required. On this, offers had been obtained from the qualified surveyors in Timaru, ' and that of Mr Merchant, at JB9O, had been accepted. The foreman reported that in order to get thebestresults from the dredge, the crane and winch . engines should be connected with the condenser, thus saving fuel and time in watering. MrHendry, engineer of the dredge, supported this recommendation, and added further suggestions, which were referred to the consulting engineer. The harbour-master reported the arrival of twenty-five vessels, aggregating 11,407 tons, during May. The total quantity dredged during the month was 13,600 torn). Mr Bullock moved, pursuant to notice — " That plans and specifications be prepared for a 500-foot extension of the breakwater from the present end of the outer arm, with a view to having the same submitted at once to a Royal Commission for approval;" and " That the moneys derived from the sale of the Mana, £8500, and the Taniwha Eeßerve Fund, J62129, be set aßide aa a Breakwater Extension Fund, to be supplemented as the Board's finances may permit." A loDg di6cnssion ensued on the first motion, which was carried by six votes to four, and the second was then carried without dissent. Accounts amounting to .£428 93 Id were paaßed for payment.
