The Supreme Court opened this morning before Judge Williams. The calendar includes cases of mtirder; , rape,' forgery, perjury and theft. The Judge's remarks .in charging the Grand Jury were brief. Referring to the Dean case, his Honor said that if the evidence that came before them corresponded with the | depositions he had read, they could hardly escape finding a true bill. True bills were* returned in all oases. John Comber 'Young,' a married man, for forgery, waß admitted to probation for twelve months, one condition being that he should abstain j from liquor for that period. William John Calvert, formerly an employs' in Fitzgerald's circus, pleaded guilty to a criminal assault on a girl ten years old at Riverton, and was sentenced to Beven years' imprisonment and one flogging of twenty lashes. William Soobie, - aged eighteen, for lar- r ceny, was admitted to twelve months' probation. Alexander MTCenzie, aged nineteen, for stealing two cheques, was sentenced to otte month's; hard labour* A "Chinaman named Lok Tsoi, charged with assault on Ah, Kong, causing actual bodily harm, by. biting off his nose in a squabble in an opium den at Mokbmai, was found guilty of a common assault, and sentenced to one month's imprisonment. He ,was not represented by counsel. This concluded the criminal business except the Dean murder cases and. a private prosecution for perjury, Meikle v, Lambert.. As the Dean cases have been arranged for next week the perjury Case will be taken to-morrow, and followed by civil business. The trial of Mrs Dean begins on Tuesday. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Cmrt opened today.. There were five chargee on the calendar. The grand jury threw out a charge against C. Paul of maliciously wouudtDg "a horse, and found > true bills in the other four cases. William "Williams, -an old offender, for stealing a hoise, carfc and. haro 638 from the Salvation Army Barracks at Temuka, waß sentenced \6 two yearß' imprisonment. J. M'Coy, charged with stealing JBIB from a mate at a farm cump at Rakaia,: was found guilty, and was admitted to probation for t velve month b. 'P. A. Mitchell, charged with forging and uttering a cbeque for .£lO at Peel Forest, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to six months' imprisonment and ordered to pay £10 to the prosecutor. George Alves came up on five charges of forging endorsements to cheques. The jury, after a retirement; of nearly nix hours, returned a verdict of guilty, and the prisoner was sentenced to eighteen months' imprisonment, with hard labour.
