DEATH OF AN OLD IDENTITY.
At the Southland Hospital on Wednesday diad.Mr T. M. Brodrick, of Te Anau, well known as " Captain Brodrick" and an old identity of Southland. He was (says the Southland Times) a native of the -United States, served ia the Federal Army as a Arooper, and was wounded in one of the •early engagements of the Civil War. Xieaving America afe the conclusion of the war,- he came to New Zealand, and settled ia Southland during tho Lake rush, and vsb (employed by Mr Davis, contractor for the 'fitat railway schema under the Troariaoial Government. He .next went to liake -Te Anau, and took employment as boatman and contractor on the lake at the • 4ime,,37hen the Hankinson Bros., of -Lynwood. and a few others, were the only inhabitants of the district. In later years Mr Brodlick undertook the duties of guide to tourists and was instrumental in placing the "first steamer' on the lake. He was <a ■ rough diamond, and his quaint .fltories and colloquialisms were a source of much amusement to tourists.
