Magisterial. — There were no civil cases to be disposed of at the Christchnrch Magistrate's Court to-day. .

Abeebt.— Datectiva Madder n to-day arrested a lad on a charge of having stolen j a bay mare value £18, and a saddle and bridle value £2 ss, the property of Thomas Burgess. Postal and Telegraphic.— The follow. ing appointments in the Christchurch district are gazetted :— Postmaster at Birdling's Flat, John Lutton ; telephonist at Linwood, Joseph Armstrong; linemen, £. J. Bowley and T. Whelan. New Tobaccos. — Messrs Eelick Bros., tobacconists, Colombo Street, direot attention in this iesne to the "light and dark Oak tobaccos" they are offering for sale, and of which they are makiog a special display in their window.

The LiCENSiwa Act.— At the Police Court, this 1 morning, two witnesses, in the oonrae of tbeir evidence, mentioned that they had had a drink nt an hotel at about 12.30 on Sunday morning. The Bench directed Sergeant-Mi jor Mason's attention to the matter.

Bans of Hops. — The Crescent fioad Band of Hope held ita monthly meeting on Thursday la6t, when therw was a very good attendance of members and friends. Included in the programme were songs by Mr G. Moor, a whistle sola by Mr Fcrd, and aßhorb address by Mr Deine.

Entertainment at Port.— The " Bingaroo" Minstrels, belonging to H.M.S. IJingarooma, will give an entertainment in the Oddfellows' Hall, LytteltoD, to-morrow evening, in aid of the West Lytcelton Parsonage fond. The ship possesses an excellent troupe, and wherever the men have performed the entertainments have been highly successful.

CfißiaTcHUEofi Cen tbal v Mission.— Lash evening there was a good attendance at the Central Mission service, when Pastor Birch preached on the subject of the "Lifting up of Jesus for the Good of Humanity." Misses Midgley and A. Lawrence and Meßars ■ Btetion and Broon sang 80169, and the choir, under the leadership of Mr Jones,- contributed selections, Mrs Birch accompanying on the organ.

A&akh of Fire. — An alarm of fire was given about half-pa6t one o'clock this afternoon, and a largo volume of smoke was saen ascending in the east, Home distance outside the city. The firebfells were rung, and the chemical engine from

Chester Street went out, but soon returned, and the men in charge reported that the Bmoke had been caused by a burning , hedge beyond the public cemetery.

Patents.*— The following are included in the latest patent lists; — Complete specifications — R. M. Macdonald, engineer, Christchurcb, an improved attachment for regulating the operation of turnstiles; J. Carder, Christcharch, an improved whisk ; T. E. Kilworth, engineer, Ashburton, an improved machine for separating seeds, &o. ; A. Billine, tinsmith, Christohurch, an improved kerosene pump. Provisional specifications —J. Turner, Hare wood Road, Christchurch, and F. W. Straok, Dunedin, a cure for foot-rot in sheep; H. Amos, St Albans, an improved frying-pan.

Civil. Service Social.— The annual Civil Service social was held last Friday evening, at the Art Gallery, and was very largely attended. Songs and other items were contributed, including a capitallyplayed flute solo by Mr J.,Bowley, and Mr Seager entertained the company for half an hour with legerdemain. The refreshments were excellent. Mr Harry Fleming presided at the piano and also played the accompaniments . in a creditable manner. The details generally were admirably carried out, and the success of the affair refleoted great credit on the management of the secretary, Mr F. C. Hawley.

Supreme Covet. — The civil siitingß of the Supreme Ccurt were opened tbiß morning before Hib Honor Mr Jußtice Denniaton. Three cases were adjourned by consent. In the case of Shute v. Clark, a friendly suit to determine the interpretation of a will, a decree was made in terms of the petition. His Honor also sat in divorce, and granted decrees nisi in the cases of Jowers v. Jowers, the husband's petition, and Trott v. Trott, the wife's petition. The case of Williams v. Dombrain and others, one of those arising out of the Switchback railway accident, will be taken before his Honor and a special jujy at 11 a.m, to-morrow.

Richmond Fbbe Mkthodist Chtjbch. — In connection with this church, which had "been closed for several weeks on account of alterations to the choir gallery, re-opening and anniversary services were held yesterday when the JSev S. Macfarlane preached in the morning and the Eev J. W. Elliott in the evening. In the afternoon the service ■was musical in character, a rhyming story ''There's Help at Hand," being recited by scholars. There were crowded congregations, and the financial results were satisfactory. The anniversary concert and coffee supper takes place to-morrow night, when the cantata " Bethlehem" will be performed by the church choir asßißted by friends. Joubnalistic.— The first number of a new weekly journal, The Sun, made its appearance on Saturday. It contama eight rases of varied reading matter, and is published at the modeßfc price of one penny. _ . Thbosophical Society. — The regular Sunday afternoon meeting of this Society was held yesterday at 3 p.m. at the lodgeroom, Opera Houee. An intere sting paper waTread by the President, entitled » Man Si the Light of Theosophy." There was a eood attendance of members and visitors, and an animated discussion followed the RoYAL.-The Mostyn-Dalziel Dramatic Company repeated Proof at the Theatre Boyal on Saturday evening, when the various sensational scenes were loudly applauded. The Company gave a sacred concert last evening, when a very good programme was submitted. They leave for Dunedin to-morrow, and will open there on Wednesday evening. The Tivom Company. — There was a good attendance at the Opera House on Saturday night, when the Tivoh Speciality Company repeated the programme of the previous evening. The various items were ffiily received by the audience. In connection with the performance of this company, mention must be made of the efficient assiatance rendered *y the jeooma.
