Timaru Harbour Board.
The monthly meeting of the Tim am Harbonr Board was held yesterday. All 'the members were present, and Mr Talbot presided. The Secretary was instructed to take the necessary steps before next meating for making a levy upon the local bodies •ia the harbour district for £6000 towards the interest. on harbour loans. The question of renewing the policy taken out last year with the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company to relieve the Board from liability under the Employers' Liability Act; was discussed. Laat year the Board paid £50 premium for the fullest benefits offered, and deducted 4d in the £1 from wages paid, paying Id in the jB itself. Some members objected to renewing the premium on the ground that it waß illegal to make deductions from wages. Eventually . the- Chairman' was authorised to pay a premium of £lff 15s to insure the barest nakfl of the Board only, provided that such policies were now being, issued. In this case no deductions will be made from wages. Some correspondence with the Lyttelton Harbour Board regarding the hive of the tug Mana was read. The applicant* considered the terms (£IOO per week, with all expenses and insurance) too high. . A resolution was papeed that the tug should remain on the Blip for another month, for inspection by possible purchaser?. Plans for the laying out of tne Board* reclamation south of the breakwater into "store site?, wikh railway sidinge and road; were received from Mr Burnett, resident engineer, accompanied by a description and a rough draft of uom-j oH the '^conditions of a mutual agreement batween the Board and the Railway Department. Consideration wa3 deferred for a month. An application by Messrs Guinness and Le Cren for a site behind Messrs Mill and Co's store, 330 feet by 40 feet, at £20 per annmm, was refused. The Harbourmasters report stated that 6400 torn had been dredged between April 8 and May 11. The net wharfage return for thefonr weeks
to the end of March was jfi62s. Accounta amounting to £885 10s were parsed for payment. The report and recommendations of IMr Maxwell, consulting engineer, presented sinoeihe previousmeetmg.were then 'considered. The Chairman invited discussion, and most of the members spoke or" the report as BfttißfactoryJ 11 "^The Chairman pointed out that the repirt was a departure from all the professional novice previously given Co the Board, as Mr Maxwell advised that toe shingle should be allowed to go round the breakwater and then be dredged out of the way, whereas all previous advisers said that if the shingle was albwed to go round, it would block up the entrance. Mr Manchester and other mem- " feari said that they were prepared to accept the engineer'a assurance that it would not block the' entrance. A resolution was carried, without dissent, that the report flbjould. be approved and the recommeodutioos adopted, and the Chairman was 'nttfborised to see the latter carried out. Chi** among them is the placing of Mr W. Gav.'^he Board's foreman, in charge of t.ne /dredge, with instruction* to see that it is worked to the best advantage.
