School Committee.

•. » ■ KAIAPOL At the meeting of this committee yesterday there were present Mes3rß Moore (in the chair), Coup, Fraser, Clark, Voting, Caverhill, M'&mney and the Mayor. Correspondence was received from the Eduoation Board, notifying that the amount of money spent on a piano had not been refunded, and asking if the mem* ■ bers of the committee were prepared to pay the Efame. Mr Caverhill moved the following resolutions :— " (1) That thia committee's responsibility in connection with the accounts dates only from its election on April 23, 1895 (vide a meeting of the Board regarding, Fernside school on May 8) ; (2) that this committee has no funds available from which it can refund the £25 paid for piano. (3) That this commi t tee respectfully submits that the Board would have no legal right to deduct the sum of £25 from the incidental grant, and points out that were this action taken it would be a great hardship upon the children attending* the school, as it would necessitate the stoppage of the usual supply of coals in the winter weather; (4) That there is nothing in the minutes { of the committee showing the names of any of the committee as responsible for the vote to authorise the purchase, aho that some who were then on the committee are now dead and others have left, also that the purohase of the piano was made in good faith, and that the Board did not supply the committee with a printed circular stating what the incidental funds could be spent on until after the piano had been obtained some months; that the instrument was purchased for the better teaching of music to the pupils, in the place of one that had been lent ; also that the piano comes under the head of school furniture." These resolutions were seconded by Mr F eld wick and carried unanimously, The Chairman stated that the school had been closed for potato picking, and would be re-opened on Monday next. Messrs Feldwick and Caverhill were elected' as the Visiting Committee for the ensuing twelve months. Accounts amounting to JBIB 193 8d were passed, subject to two accounts being certified as correct) by the Vißicing Committee. A letter was received from the Board, approving the appointment of Messrs Mathers and Lynekey as teachers. Thfl mp.flHncr then terminated.
