MELBOUENE, May 11.

The verdict in connection with the sewerage drowning accident was to the effect that there was no evidence to show the cause. The jury added a rider stating that the Metropolitan Board of Works had not placed the tunnel sufficiently deep below the river-bed to secure its safety. They also found that two trucks which were present at one time in the air lock, should not have been there.

Eeheosai..— -The Rev J. Thorne, who is announced to preach at the Bible Christian Church to-morrow, is the son of the Rev James Thorne, one of the founders of the Bible Christian denomination. Mr Thome's ministerial career, both in the Old Country and South Australia, has been attended with great success. He is en route for England, with his sister, Mies Thorne, iu order to be present at the celebration of his late father's centenary.

Chbybanthemum-growing. — A large number of people availed themselves yesterday of Dr Irving's invitation to the public to iaspeot the chrysanthemums growing in his garden, Market Square. Chess. — A pleasant evening was spent at Sydenham on Thursday evening, when the Linwood and Sydenham Chess Clubs met in friendly contest, which resulted in a decisive victory for the visitors by seven games to two.
