Women's Convention.

A well-attended meeting of the Women's ' Convention was held at the Young Men's ; Christian Association Booms, last night, j Hiss A. Hookham presiding. Before pro- I ceeding with the busin«ss of the evening, the following motion was proposed and -carried : — " That this meeting- is of opinion ; there should be a fuller and more i public investigation into the Christ- ! church hospital dispute, and that the ' persons dismissed should bo accorded a fair hearing. The motion to be forwarded to the Hospital Board and ; also to the Chairman of the general meeting convened for Saturday." A paper was then read by Miss Sherriff-Bain on "The Need for the Dissemination of the Laws of Biology." A strong plea was made for the early trainingof cbiidremnbotany,andlater in physiology, and an animated discussion followed, in which Mesdjunes Smith, Blake, ■ Wells, Willis and Misaes Tayior and Smith took part. A vote of hearty thanks was accorded Miss Sherriff-Bain for her able and suggestive paper. After some further discussion the following motion was carried : — " That the Women's Convention, i feeling the need for a more generally j diffused knowledge of the laws of biology, ; should petition the Bjard of Governors of j Canterbury College to arrange for a course ! of lectures on thfs subject during the winter months, and than these lectures be either free, or, if that is impracticable, \ a nominal charge only be made." |
