Ashburton County Council.
The ordinary general meeting of the Ashburton County Council was held at Ashburton yesterday; present — Mesarß Hugo Friedlander (chairman), A. M'Farlane; G. J. Harper, J.'Qrigg, E. G. Wright, B. Eiohardson, J. Johnstone, D. Cameron and D. Williamson. It waa resolved thafc ther Engineer should be instructed to arrange for the halt-yearly overhaul of races. Several applications for water supply were granted and other water-race business waa dealt with. The county bridges were reported to be in good order. The committee appointed to inquire iato the condition of the Ashburton traffic bridge handed in a report, which was adopted. The committee recommended that the bridge should be replanked in sections, and that a ford should be kept in order near the bridge for traction engines and other heavy traffic. An extension of time was granted to the Irrigation Committee to bring up a report at the next meeting of the Council, Accounts amounting to £500 were passed for payment. Mr Ward having obtained judgment on appeal against the Council, with costs, Mr Harper moved and Mr Williamson seconded that the case be taken to the Court of Appeal. The motion waa lost. Mr J. M'keague forwarded certain- accounts to the Council, for expenses incurred in connection with the late election. It was resolved that the accounts should be laid on the table. Several alterations were made ia the rate roll. A claim for £2 damages caused to a trap by a hole in the traffic bridge, was disallowed by the Council. It waa decided to ask the members for the county to support the construction of the Whitcombe Pas* track to the West Coast. It was decided to impound sheep trespassing in County Council plantations. In reply to a circular from the Chriatohursh City Council in reference to the nnemployed.it was decided to endorse the action of the Chriatchurch Council, It was resolved that the Council was unable to furnish any reliable information with regard^ to the Fair Rent Bill. Three slaughtering licenses weze granted. Mr Richardson stated that a petition was being signed by those in favour of an extended irrigation scheme for the district, and would be presented to the Council ia due course.
