City Guards.
The annual social gathering: of htef Chriatcluirch CUy Guards iv their ciderly room iflßO night was "one of the most pleaeanb \ .ever held "by the carpo. The room was very prettily decorated, aad tables adorned with 2*^ planta bore a bountiful supply of refreshments, natercd for very satisfactorily by Mr L. J. Smith. There wao a large attendance. Captain Creswell presided, irad among the ' gnests were Majors Riohtwds, Wolfe and Francis, and es>Captain Mossey, former officers of the two corps wbioh are united iv the present City Guards. TuoKov 0. J, Mer ton, honorary chaplain of the company, and Lieutenacta Sandford and Baker, and several old members of, the corps were also present. Apologies were i received for the abaecca of Colonel Gordon, rx-C/sptiiin Bishop and Staff SerKuant-mnjor Bsrrett. The toasts of "The Queen," " The Army and Nn7y " and "Colonel Gordon and the Disbriofc Staff " were honoured. A series of capital pictures, a view of the first Hillaborongh camp, portraits of old volunteers, and BcoiiQs in the lives of Neleon, Wellington and General Gordon, were shown by Mr Heftier by meana of the oxy-hydrogen liin*(jgbt, while descriptive readings were given by Private Batoholor, and appropriate songs sung by Lieutenant Sandfosrd; A besvrty vote of thanks waa ■ accorded by acclamation to Mr Seager, who, inackaowlodging it, offered to give another similar exhibition for the. entertainment of tbe Company. The toast of "Our Gusstfl" was tbea proposed by Sergeant Steere, Rod responded "toby Major Wolfe. Captain Creawell then presented the- following prizes :•— Shooting prizes— Champioa belt lon lifiV shooting in A Claaa (Martinis), Corporal Meddiugs; champion beifc B oJaes (Sniders), Corporal Jeffries; second prize, given by Major Wolfe, Sergeaati Murphy 5 C Claoa (Sniderc), Private Qeale; recruifc' prize, firsi given by ex-Sergeant Wftkalia, Private Allard; second, given by Messrs Shaw, Bobinaon 'and Co., Private Franklin. Attendance prizes, for having attended nvery parade during the year— Sergeant Butcher (ex-Captain Masney's prize), 1 Privates Ward, Allard, K. F. Hooper and Steere. The other toasts were:— "The Pxiza-wintiers," proposed by Lieutenant Baker, and responded to by Corporalo Meddings and' Jeffries bud Sergeant Murpby ; " The Donora of Prizes/ proposed by Privato Batchelor, and replied to by Major VYolfe &nd oxCaptain Ma33ey ; "Captain Cre3w«H and the Office: s/' propoßed by Major Wolfe; "Tho Ladies," proposed by Sergeant Foster, aud responded to by Corporal Tateaj and " The Prese." Several capital Bongs were given during the evening.
