Amberlbt Recreation Reserve.— This reserve* which is under the control of the Kowai Bomaim Board, has recently under* gone a thorough transformation, and in place of being, as formerly, a mere sheep paddock, ia now one of the prettießt Bporls, grounds ia the northern district. The fiat has been ploughed, levelled and laid down in grass for cricket and other athletic Bports, while the surrounding terraceß have been covered with tnrf and made accessible by. serpentine paths, along which seats have been placed, bo that spectators are, as in an amphitheatre, raised tier above tier, and ail can be comfortably seated and *iew the sports going on below. The ! expense, which was considerable, has been ' borne by the Kowai Domain Board, which had husbanded its revenue for some years past till sufficient funds were in hand to undertake the great improvements effected. The works were planned by the Chairman. Mr T. M'Naught, and have been faithfully oerried out by the contractor, Mr J. Thomas, of Amberiey, and a large staff of workmen under him. One Hypothesis.— She: "Why is it when physicians are ill, they never attend Ito their own cases ? " He : "I don't know, j but Ishould say it was because they cau't I charge themselves anything for it."
