Amuri County Council.

_> The ordinary meeting of the Amuri County Council wss held at Culverden on Sept. 8; presen;— Messrs D. Butherford (ohairman). J. H. Davison, D. D. Macfarlane, W. Thomson, A. Macfarlane, F. H. The Chairman reported as follows:— Since last meeting the following correspondence has been received :— From the Commit sioner of Taxes, Wellington, stating, in reply to this Council's application for subsidy, tbat as Parliament has not yet made any appropriation for such payments, he is unable at present to certify to any advance to local bodies, and asking the Council to renew its application after the Appropriation Act has been passed. From the Taranaki County Council, forwarding copy of a resolution passed by that Council, requesting the Government to contribute a fair proportion towards the oost of assessment in addition to the present conditional offer to allow the local bodies tbe use of maps and seotion lists, and trusting that the Council will see its way clear to paes a resolution to the same eifeot. From the Kaikoura County Council, asking when it might expect 'to receive the license fees for the hotels in its district; also the amount for the conditional license issued to Thomai Whitty on May 24, last, and stating that the Crown law officer held that those fees should have been paid to the local authority where the licensed honses are situated. The labour gangs have been employed during the month in cutting, carting and planting willows for the protective works on the north bank of the Hurunui Etver; and also in making a cutting into tbe Conway Eiver on the.WaiauKaikoura Eoad. Having met with more rook in thi3 cutting than was at first anticipated, the work bas not been got on as quickly as was expected. The contractors for performing the works at Hurunui for tbe willow plantations are progressing favourably with their contracts. I expert them to. have the Whole of the works completed in about three weeks. On Sept. 4 the pnblio pound at Waiau was maliciously . broken into and two cows released therefrom. The matter ha 3 been put into tbe bands of the police. The credit balance at tbe bank of the County Fund account is _8504 13s sd, of the Waterrace account £61 13d, and of the Government Loans to Local Bodies account £900. The report was approver?, and the Clerk wss instructed to acknowledge the receipt of the letters from the Taranaki and Kaikoura County Councils. MISCELLANEOUS. The overseer was instructed t> obtain offers for the position of poundkeeper at Waiau, and to make arrangementa with Mr J. Coakley for putting planks in the Waiau bridge when nee. s .ary_ The Inspector of Works reported that the contractor for the water-race extension waß making fair progress with his work. Mr W. O. Butherford required two wooden culverts across the race. He estimated the cost approximately art _£13 each (approaches excepted). The contractor was willing to do all the labour, approaches included, if the Council would supply the material for the price he tendered for making the crossings, namely, £16. There was about a. mile of fence erected. on the land belonging to the old race which could be used in fencing the rew race. The report was approved, and it was resolved that the Clerk Bhould write to Mr W. O. Butherford regarding the removal of the wire fence alluded to in the Inspector's report ; also to inform him that the Council was willing to give him _£6 per acre for the land taken from him for water-race purposes, put in culverts across the race where required by him, snd do all necesßary fencing. „, Accounts amounting to _8328 7s 9d were passed for payment; and the meeting terminated.
