Borough Councils.

The fortnightly meeting of the Ashburton Borough Council waa held on Monday. The Mayor stated that the debit balance at the bank was £1327 4s, and that £86 Ss 8d for rate?, rents, &c, had been collected sinc9 last meeting. The Ashburton County Co'incil wrote, forwarding a statement by which it had arrived at its account against the Borough Council for payment of part of the recent licensing election expenses ; also stating that it bad recommended to the Licensing Committee that a salary of only JE2O should he paid to the licensing clerk. Councillor Thomas moved— "That this Council endorse the aotion taken by the County Council with respect to its suggestion to the licensing committee." The motion was carried. Ib was decided tha. payment of the clerk Bhould be deferred until the result of the recommendation was known, and consideration of the account for the expenses of the election was also deferred. The Town Clerk was instructed to see that all conditions of borough leases were strictly adhered to, and to report to the Council any breach. Accounts amounting to £84 were passed for payment. After some routine business had been dealt with the meeting terminated. The ordinary meeting of the Waimate .Borough Council was held on Monday evening; present— The Mayor (Mr W. Coltman), and Councillors Evans, Cobgrove, Smith, Jones, Mar-chest.., Nicol, Cameron and Inkster. Correspondence was read and dealt with. The Mayor reported that a meeting of the Council and Fire Brigade had been held during the week, and that a report from the Fire Brigade would be placed on the table at an early date. Tenders were opened for the proposed new Council chambers, but were considered too high, and the Clerk was instructed to request the architect to prepare plans on a smaller ec 'le. Account 3 amounting to £58 8s lOd were passed for payment.
