THE EARTHQUAKE.
At 4.55 this morning there were two distinct shocks of earthquake. The first was heralded by a roaring noise, and was of short duration, but was quickly followed by a much more severe shake. No damage is reported as having occurred through the shocks. A sharp shock of earthquake, lasting Beveral seconds, was felt in the Northern district at about eight minutes to five o'clock this morning. A distinct shock was felt at Kaiapoi at ten minutes to 5 a.m. The direction appeared to be from north to south, and continued some seconds. [Pur Pbkss Association.] WAIKABI, A. gust 29. Two shocks of earthquake were felt here at 4.60 and 6.30 this morning. The direction was north aud south.
