UNCUSTOMED CIGARS.
Heavy Fines Inflicted. At the Christchurch Magistrate's Court ] to-day, before Mr R. Baetham, S.M., E. G. Warnes, fishmonger, of Christchurcb, was charged with having, on March 1, 1894, knowingly harboured, acquired possession ! of and concealed certain uncustomed goods, / to wit, 317 cigars, contrary to Section 210 < of the Customs Laws Consolidation Act, 1 1882. \ Mr Stringer appeared to prosecute on \ behalf of the Crown, and Mr Russell for •, accused, who pleaded guilty. ] Accused was fined £100, which was j mitigated to £50, with £4 U6d costs, by ] consent of the Colloctor of Customs. < John ABhton, hotelkeeper, of Lyttelton, \ waß charged with having, on July 19, knowingly harboured, acquired possession ] of, and concealed certain uncustomed goods, \ to wit, 198 c'gare. • , Mr Stringer appeared to prosecute in 1 this case also. Mr Nalder appeared for , accused, who pleaded guilty. Accused waß fined £100, which was mitigated to £25, with coßt3 £3 10s, by consent of the Collector of Customs.
